The New England Chapter of the American Musicological Society is one of fifteen regional Chapters. AMS members are enrolled in their regional chapter by default upon joining the AMS. The regions covered by the New England Chapter of the AMS extend beyond the New England states and officially include the Maritime Provinces and eastern Quebec, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and the central and eastern regions of Connecticut. Our neighboring AMS Chapters are the Greater New York and New York State – St. Lawrence Chapters.

As our bylaws state, the AMS-NE Chapter seeks to foster:

  1. The advancement of scholarship in the various fields of music through research, learning, and teaching,
  2. The cooperation among members of the Society in the Chapter’s geographical area,
  3. The exchange of ideas, and
  4. The regional implementation of policies, programs and directives as adopted by the government of the Society.

Each year, AMS-NE typically organizes three (3) in-person, hybrid, or virtual meetings of research presentations, roundtables, keynote lectures, and performances, usually hosted by members of music departments, programs, or institutions around the Chapter.

The AMS Strategic Plan for 2021-2025, released in the February 2022 AMS Newsletter and linked on the national AMS site, states its aims of “inviting the participation of people in many lines of work; increasing its investments in public-facing musicology; and fostering a broad and open network that connects people not only at the AMS Annual Meeting, but throughout the year.”

The plan is organized around five areas (support, capacity, outreach, events, and governance), which have important consequences for the New England Chapter and its endeavors, including sponsoring of in-person or virtual professional development initiatives within the Chapter or at the national meetings, increasing allocations of financial support to the Chapter by the AMS for Chapter activities (including those beyond the Chapter’s regular meetings), promoting Chapter programs through AMS’s many social media channels, listserv, and e-newsletter, and undertaking to launch, re-design, or upgrade websites for all chapters and study groups.

If you have particular ideas for new programming or initiatives by or in coordination with the Chapter that might resonate with the new AMS Strategic Plan, especially as the AMS works to be more inclusive, equitable, accessible, and environmentally sustainable, please do not hesitate to share them via our Contact page or to bring them to the next Chapter business meeting.
